Harwood Street Garden

The original Harwood Street garden site was of little wildlife value, crowded by overgrown cotoneasters and a magnet for litter. NESST received funding for the new garden from Grow Wild, who also funded the Woodhead Road Wildlife garden nearby. The plot of approximately 36 sqm is owned by The Yorkshire Tile Company who have given their support to the project. Positioned on a corner, the roughly triangular plot has a mature silver birch tree and the wall of the Yorkshire Tile Company on one side. In Spring 2025, NESST volunteers, joined by local residents and volunteers from the Sheffield United Community Foundation, dug out the overgrown cotoneasters and planted hedging plants and shrubs with wildlife benefit.

Planting includes: pulmonaria, dogwood, gorse, virburnum, globe thistle, berberis, sea holly, foxgloves, honeysuckle and dog rose. The group have put two sparrow nest boxes up on the wall, as house sparrows are found in the area. There are nearby street trees planted by NESST on Hill Street, which will improve connectivity for wildlife between the garden areas. Also nearby is another NESST project, the Randall Street garden, once a grassy area, now a wildflower meadow.
