Avenues of Green

A proposed project

Our area of Nether Edge and Sharrow has a heritage of a network of hundreds of mature street trees, which began to be planted in the mid 19th century. They now form green corridors and are a heritage landscape with environmental, cultural and health benefits. This heritage is now at risk, as trees that have died or were removed were not always replaced. Our project will plant 89 street trees to help sustain the heritage landscape as well as planting 60 street trees to create a new avenue. A programme of events will engage, inform and welcome people to experience and celebrate the street trees, explore their history and cultural significance, and learn about the important role street trees play in our urban environment.

NESST is planning to apply to the National Heritage Lottery Fund to support this project. We are looking at submitting an application towards the end of this year (2026). We need to find out how many people who live near the gaps that could be filled (and in the new streets) will want to have a tree outside their house. This is because Sheffield City Council requires the consent of the resident living near the new street tree to give their agreement. We hope that the Heritage Lottery will provide most of the funds but also need to raise some ourselves, which is why we are asking for a donation, if possible at the doors we knock on.
