A proposed project
Our area of Nether Edge and Sharrow has a green heritage of hundreds of mature street trees, planted in avenues from the mid 19th century. They now form green corridors and are a heritage landscape with environmental, cultural and health benefits. This heritage is now at risk, as trees that have died or were removed were not always replaced. Our project, Avenues of Green, will plant 89 street trees to help sustain the heritage landscape as well as planting 60 street trees to create a new avenue. A programme of events will engage, inform and welcome people to experience and celebrate the street trees, explore their history and cultural significance, and learn about the important role street trees play in our urban environment.
NESST is planning to apply to the National Heritage Lottery Fund to support this project. We are looking at submitting an application towards the end of this year (2026). This summer, volunteers will be calling on houses on the roads in the heritage area where there are gaps, to find out whether residents agree to a tree being planted near their home. Volunteers will also be calling on residents at locations on three streets in Sharrow which have no street trees, these would be for the new avenues. The reason for asking this question is because Sheffield City Council requires the agreement of the resident living near the proposed new street tree. Should our application be successful, the grant will provide most of the funds but we also need to raise some ourselves, which is why we are asking for a donation at the doors we knock on. This is entirely voluntary and won’t affect whether a tree is planted there.
